Janice Manzi Sabatine, PhD, PCC

 

FOUNDER

Dr. Sabatine is a certified executive coach through the Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business and earned a BS in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame and a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. With over 30 years’ experience in biomedical research, she has been influential in the publication of over 50 journal articles and book chapters and nearly 30 funded grant applications. Recognizing the need among her technically trained peers for stronger leadership and interpersonal skills, Janice trained as an executive coach. In this role, Janice has helped numerous academic, scientific, and healthcare professionals become stronger, more effective leaders.

A researcher by training, Janice relies on evidence-based methodologies to support her coaching and coach training activities. In 2015, Dr. Sabatine and Dr. Steven Wendell were recipients of an Institute of Coaching research grant to study the impact of this coaching-based course supplemented with external coaching; “The Impact of Developmental Coaching on Career Adaptability Capacity and Moderators of Sustained Career Development among Graduate Students”. In 2018, Dr. Sabatine and Dr. Susan English co-edited the Professional Coaching: Principles and Practice coaching reference book. Dr. Sabatine is co-director of training in the Professional Coach Certification Program in the Palumbo Donahue School of Business at Duquesne University and is a Past President of the Pittsburgh chapter of the International Coach Federation.

Teresa Sabatine

COLLABORATOR

Teresa Sabatine is a Certified Professional Coach and Creative Consultant. She coaches and empowers women to maximize their impact on the world and builds strategies for mission-driven organizations. She is a graduate of the Duquesne University professional coaching certificate program where she studied the Intentional Change Theory, Internal Family Systems Coaching, and the Self-Determination Theory.  

Her background is in entertainment where she worked at the intersection of production, community relations, and content development. She spent a decade in New York City, Hollywood, and at Nike working on hundred-million-dollar projects and buying and selling content to major networks and studios. Some of her clients include; Lionsgate, NBC, HGTV, Paramount, Sony, and IndyCar. In 2016 she became the first ever Film Commissioner for the City of Indianapolis where she established protocol for filmmaking in the city and generated $21 million-dollars in film and media spending in under three years. Now she dedicates her time to helping women owned businesses and individuals who are navigating grief and transition.

Susan English, OSB, EdD, MCC

Dr. Susan English helped to found Duquesne University’s Professional Coach Certification Program where she is Co-Director and primary faculty. She also maintains a private practice where she specializes in developing greater emotional intelligence, overcoming negative self-talk, improving communication skills, creating good habits, and finding life balance in service of a client’s career. As an Educational Leadership Coach, some of Susan’s favorite clients are faculty, chairs and university staff working on life balance and project completion. Susan has a particular fondness for helping graduate students who are struggling to complete their dissertations.

Dr. English has over 30 years of experience in the field of education and holds a doctorate in education. She taught or supervised in grades K-12 in public school, developed educational programs as an academic specialist in a prison setting, and was an Instructor and Assistant Professor for 12 years with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is an award winning student mentor, program developer, and social justice advocate. Dr. English is a member of the International Coach Federation and is a Past-President of the Pittsburgh Coaches Association.

Jane is a professionally trained and certified coach offering individual, team and group coaching; meeting facilitation; and keynote speaking. She offers assessment in DISC©, Conflict Dynamic Profile©, A Different Kind of Smart - Emotional Intelligence©, Strategic Leader Development©, and Personal Directions©.

A former executive with more than 20 years of leadership experience, Jane knows how to leverage teamwork for success. “I’m convinced people want to contribute and be a part of a high-performing team. I coach leaders to identify and remove barriers so they will excel.

Leaders appreciate Jane's ability to help them grow in emotional intelligence, enhance executive presence, lead strategic change initiatives and navigate career challenges. Steve Wendell, PhD, PC

Steven K. Wendell, PhD, ACC, is an assistant professor in the Departments of Pharmacology & Chemical Biology, Director of Professional Development in the Biomedical Masters Program (BMP) and was the Founding Director of the Center for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Career Development at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2012, Dr. Wendell simultaneously completed an ICF certified coach training program while designing and implementing a two semester credit-based graduate course based on coaching approaches that is now offered as “Foundations of Successful Career Planning and Development”. In 2015, Dr. Wendell and Dr. Janice Sabatine were recipients of an Institute of Coaching research grant to study the impact of this coaching-based course supplemented with external coaching; “The Impact of Developmental Coaching on Career Adaptability Capacity and Moderators of Sustained Career Development among Graduate Students”.  In addition to sustaining multiple sections of this course, a modified version of this course and addition of “Professionalism and Non-Cognitive Development” are core courses in the BMP.

Dr. Wendell has also leveraged his experience integrating coaching approaches into academia as co-investigator together with professional coach consultant, Dr. Michael Forlenza and Dr. Janice Sabatine, on projects funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) such as “Professional Mentoring Skills in Service to Diversity” (PROMISED) (PI, Doris Rubio) ; “Leading Emerging And Diverse Scientist to Success” (LEADS) (PI, Doris Rubio); and a T32 supplemental award. He is also providing coaching and related materials for physician-scientist through the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and the Physician Scientist Incubator as part of a Burroughs Wellcome Foundation award.

Michael Forlenza, PhD, MPH, MS

Dr. Forlenza has worked extensively with executive and emerging leaders across a wide variety of corporate and economic sectors, including financial services, legal services, biotechnology, healthcare, engineering, start-up, and higher education. His focus is on building and expanding the leadership competency, character, and capacity of his clients for leading in complex, uncertain, and highly changeable work environments. He has a particular interest in facilitating the emergence of leaders in the health sciences.

Prior to becoming a full-time consultant, coach, and facilitator, Dr. Forlenza served as Assistant Dean in the School of Leadership and Professional Advancement at Duquesne University. He initiated, founded, and taught in the Professional Coach Certification Program (PCCP), an International Coach Federation Accredited Coach Training Program, also serving as its Executive Director.
