Executive Coaching
At Avanti Strategies, we want
technically trained women in science and medicine to enjoy the same support
that corporate executives have enjoyed for years—the benefit of an executive
coach.
Are you aware that the National Institutes of Health, the National Science
Foundation, and numerous universities and medical schools nationwide have
identified the need for improved strategies to attract and retain women in
science, medicine, and engineering? And that executive coaching is becoming
recognized as a highly effective strategy to address this issue?
So why be left behind?
Coaching is a process that helps people move from where they are to where
they want to be. While mentoring programs have been established as part of
the professional development programs in many universities, coaching is a
relatively new approach. A mentor is typically a more senior colleague who
can offer advice to a younger faculty member about specific aspects of their
career development. In contrast, a coach is someone who works with the
mentee to put that advice into action.
Using the Sherpa Executive Coaching process, we work face to face with
clients for a fixed period of time, typically one hour, once a week for 12
weeks, and focus on improving business related behaviors. The Sherpa process
has been endorsed by Marshall Goldsmith, world renowned executive coach and
author of the New York Times bestseller, What Got You Here Won’t Get You
There. We believe our clients are successful physicians and scientists
because of the strengths they already possess. But it’s only by identifying,
acknowledging, and improving weaknesses in business behavior that our
clients rise above the pack and reach new heights in their careers.
As I made a transition in
my professional role to a new position, I was faced with many questions,
decisions, and a level of uncertainty I was not used to. Working with Dr.
Janice Sabatine, an executive coach familiar with the healthcare and
academic environments, provided an objective opportunity to reevaluate my
professional goals and examine my strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities
for growth. The business behaviors I strengthened as a result had an
immediate positive impact on my job effectiveness.

Working with Jan has been an opportunity to affirm
my strengths and acknowledge the obstacles to my professional success in a
constructive light. Through the Sherpa coaching process, Jan has asked me
powerful questions in the right sequence to help me make constructive
changes in the way I view myself. As a result, I am revamping the way I see
my value to the workplace and I am making behavioral changes to get more
personal satisfaction and stay true to my own priorities. Jan has helped me
see that my asking for what I want and need is not only appropriate for me
but is also worthwhile for my own growth and the success of my employer and
coworkers. Further, I have been able to recognize and modify some behaviors
that were obstacles to effective time management.

Publish or perish! At Avanti
Strategies, we understand that the final stage of research is publication--
and the initial and ongoing phases often involve securing funding. We help
alleviate the stress associated with journal article publication and grant
application submission by providing expert advice and services. We help
investigators and their teams establish project timelines, assign tasks, and
follow-up with accountability. We also provide assistance with the actual
writing and editing of the documents.
With over 20 years experience in biomedical research, Dr. Janice Sabatine is
uniquely positioned to help her clients. She earned a BS in chemistry from
the University of Notre Dame and a PhD in biochemistry from the University
of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. As a director of publications for several
biomedical research programs and as an independent publications consultant,
she has been influential in the publication of over 40 journal articles and
book chapters and nearly 30 funded grant applications. Janice and her team
also have extensive experience working with biomedical researchers whose
first language is not English.
Janice Sabatine has worked with me as a medical
writer and consultant for over 2 years. I have been very impressed with her
professionalism and personality as she has helped me write and edit several
manuscripts for publication and abstracts for professional meetings. As a
non-native English speaker, I have found Jan very helpful in making sure my
scientific ideas are conveyed in proper English. But her help goes beyond
merely her grammar skills. Jan’s scientific background enables her to
understand complex scientific and medical information. She is knowledgeable
and diligent and always captures the scientific meaning of the data and
presents it in a clear, concise, and compelling manner. In fact, our first
manuscript submission together was accepted without revision. Even when
working in unfamiliar scientific areas, Jan captures the meaning by
listening carefully, reading background material, and asking pertinent
questions of the authors. I seek any opportunity to work with her and
recommend her to any friends and colleagues without reservation.

Dr. Sabatine has presented a well-organized,
well-presented, and most importantly well-focused summary and review, which
I have found to be both informative and critical. Thank you, Dr. Sabatine!
—AMWA workshop attendee
The expertise of Dr. Sabatine was invaluable. She was very professional
throughout the semester, but allowed a very relaxed feeling during class.
Her input was greatly appreciated and her critiques/comments/advice will be
used in my future writing adventures!
Dr. Sabatine is a great presenter, presenting concepts/items/points clearly
and articulately. I think she was the best person to choose to give this
seminar. I don’t think it would have been the same with someone else
teaching the class.
